JAS. CALDWELL BURIED SUNDAY

WAS BORN IN VIRGINIA AND CAME TO THE COUNTY IN 1872, OVER 60 YEARS AGO

James Rhea Caldwell passed peacefully away last Thursday afternoon, following a long illness and the funeral service was held at the Methodist church at 2 o’clock, Rev. Carl G. Bader officiating. The service was largely attended by his neighbors and old friends, for Mr. Caldwell was highly esteemed by all who knew him.

He was born in Washington county, Va., Sept. 11th, 1856, so was just past 72 years of age. He came to Washington county, Neb., in March of 1872, with his parents and lived on a farm south of Blair. Four years later he was united in marriage to Miss Susan C. Rosenbaum and to this union three children were born, all of whom survive him.

Mrs. Caldwell died just eight years ago the day of his death, October 25th, a very unusual occurrence. The children are Charles J. Caldwell, of Omaha; Mrs. Laura Bates of Kennard; and Mrs. Ella Carson of this city. He leaves, also, three brothers, two sisters and a large number of other relatives and friends.

Music at the funeral service was furnished by Mrs. William Wright, Miss Elsie Hughes, Kenneth DeGroff and Rev. C.G. Bader. There was a large attendance and the floral tributes to his memory were unusually large and beautiful. Burial was in the Blair cemetery by the side of the grave of his wife.

Mr. Caldwell spent the greater part of his long life in this county and had made many friends who will greatly miss him, for he was always kindly and friendly, a good husband, father and friend, therefore a good citizen and a good man. The bereaved family have the sincere sympathy of their many friends and the memory of a beautiful life that was not lived in vain.

CARD OF THANKS: We wish in this way to express our sincere thanks and deep appreciation of the generous assistance and manifest sympathy shown us in our hour of great sorrow and also for the many floral tributes to the memory of our dear father. We wish also to thank Rev. Carl G. Bader and the singers for their kindly and helpful services.

JAMES R. CALDWELL

Funeral services were held last Sunday, Oct. 28 at the M.E. church for James R. Caldwell, whose death occurred on Thursday after a long and lingering illness.

A large gathering of old friends and neighbors attended the services, he being a man of high character and loved by all who knew him intimately.

The deceased was born in Washington county, Va., in 1856 and came to Nebraska as a young boy in the early seventies with his parents. They lived on a farm south of town and in early manhood he was married to Susan C. Rosenbalm, also of a pioneer family. His wife passed away eight years ago to the day and he is survived by three children, Laura, Mrs. Tom Bates of Kennard; Ella, Mrs. Geo. Carson of Blair; and Chas. J. of Omaha. He is also survived by three brothers, Geo. of this city, Emmet of Omaha and Andrew of Walthill, and two sisters, Mrs. Allie Kincaid of Lincoln and Mrs. A.W. Erwin of Hutchinson, Kansas.

Mr. Caldwell was a quiet, unassuming man who did his work in a quiet way and who had a kindly regard for all humanity. No one was ever heard to speak ill of him as he wanted to be a friend to all and proved himself a true one to the end.

The family has the sympathy of the community.

He leaves to mourn his loss a son, Charles J. Caldwell, of Omaha; two daughters, Mrs. Laura Bates of Kennard and Mrs. Ella Carson of this city; three brothers, W. E. of Omaha, A. J. of Walthill and George V. of this city; two sisters, Mrs. Allie Kincaid of Lincoln and Mrs. Retta Erwin of Hutchinson, Kansas, besides a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted from the Methodist church at 2:00 o’clock Sunday afternoon with Rev. Carl G. Bader officiating, following a short service at the home. A quartette composed of Rev. Bader, Prof. De Groffe, Mrs.Wm. Wright and Miss Elsie Hughes furnished music at the service. Burial was made in Blair cemetery. A host of floral tributes at the last rites were indicative of the high esteem in which he was held in this community.
