Blackman operated a mill at Fontanelle in the early years of Washington county’s history. AGED PIONEER PASSES OVER

AUGUST LALLMAN OF FONTANELLE DIED SUNDAY, JUNE 17TH, BURIED TODAY

August Lallman, one of the few aged pioneer citizens of this community, passed away at the ripe age of 89 years and 11 months at his home east of town, Sunday morning, June 17th, at 4:30 o’clock. Had he lived until July 26th he would have been 90 years old.

Although somewhat feeble from his advanced years, he enjoyed fairly good health up to about 4 days prior to his death.

He was a native of Germany and came to this country 64 years ago, coming direct to Fontanelle, where he married Miss Anna Wilkening about 5 years later and settled down to farm housekeeping on the homestead 3 ½ miles east of Fontanelle, where he has continued to reside since.

He has always been known for his quiet unassuming disposition, numbering his friends by his acquaintances. His wife preceded him in death during October of 1927.

He leaves to mourn his demise two sons and two daughters, Mrs. William Holtman, Miss Mary and William and Albert Lallman, all of Arlington.

The funeral services were held from the family home on Wednesday afternoon at 1 p.m. with Rev. Wm. Goede officiating. Interment was made in the family lot in the Lutheran cemetery in Fontanelle beside the remains of his wife.

The death of August Florenz Lallman, who died early Sunday morning, makes the third prominent Washington county pioneer who passed away in the past week or so.

Mr. Lallman was among the first of the early Washington county settlers. He was born at Bielefeld, Germany, July 26, 1838 and located at Fontanelle in 1864. Mr. Lallman often related how it was impossible to even buy smoking tobacco at Omaha when he first came here. He had many thrilling experiences with the Indians and helped to quiet an uprising at one time when they were on the war-path.

On May 13th, 1870 he was married to Anna Wilkening. Six children were born to this union, two having preceded the father in death, an infant son, Henry; and Mrs. Ed Langhorst of Nickerson. Those surviving him are Mrs. Wm. Holtman of Arlington, William, Mary and Albert, living at home. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Goede at the home north of Arlington on Wednesday, June 20 at one p.m. Interment was made at the Fontanelle cemetery.

Note: From cemetery records; died June 17; buried Section 3 Lot 7.
