Ernest S. Madland, 83

Former Arlington resident Ernest S. Madland, 83, died Friday, Jan. 22, 2010. Services will be 10 a.m. Feb. 3 at the Risen Savior Lutheran Church in Chandler, Ariz.

Ernest Sylvester Madland was born Nov. 23, 1926, in Inwood, Iowa, to Eilert and Sophia Madland. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and was a lifelong Lutheran.

On Nov. 21, 1975, he married Katherine Schmale Stuhr at Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Santa Barbara, Calif.

He was a barber for 35 years and worked at Dom’s Barber Shop and Smitty’s Big Town in Tempe, Ariz.

He enjoyed singing in the church choir and he was a member of the Sun Lakes Broadway Singers. He was also a member of the Scandinavian Club.

He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Katherine; two sons and daughters-in-law from a previous marriage, Thomas and Sylvia North and Philip and Anna Madland; step-daughter and spouse, Cheryl and Paul Rogers; six grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother and four sisters.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Risen Savior Lutheran Church.

Melcher Mortuary Chapel of the Roses in Mesa is in charge of arrangements.
