Car Pioneer, Madsen, Dies

Retired Dealer; Lived in Bluffs 70 Years

Council Bluffs

The man who built what was perhaps the first car to treavel on Iowa roads, died Wednesday at the Good Shepherd Home for the Aged, Blair, Neb.

He was L. P. Madsen, 93, a retired auto dealer and a resident of Council Bluffs 70- years. He built and drove the car there in 1899.

Mr. Madsen also was one of the city’s first auto dealers. He sold the Buick automobile for many years.

He also put his skill to other uses and built several houses. At the age of 81, he did most of the carpentry on his residence here at 125 Bluff Street.

Mr. Madsen, a native of Denmark, is survived by a son, Aaron, and a daughter, Mrs. Fred Dahl, both of Council Bluffs; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Friday at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Walnut Hill Cemetery. The body will be taken to the church from the Cutler Funeral Home at noon Friday.
