Donald E. 'Gene' Dinsmore, 72

Donald E. ‘Gene’ Dinsmore, 72, of Missouri Valley, Iowa, died Monday, May 27, at Immanuel Medical Center in Omaha.

Services were Friday, May 31, at Missouri Valley Christian Church in Missouri Valley. Interment was in Calhoun Cemetery near Missouri Valley.

Donald Eugene “Gene” Dinsmore was born Oct. 22, 1940, to Donald V. and Phyllis (Rothenay) Dinsmore in Logan, Iowa.

He graduated from Missouri Valley High School in 1959 and went to college at Peru State College in Peru and Dana College in Blair.

On July 27, 1962, he married Nancy Spires in Missouri Valley and they were blessed with three children.

He worked as a salesman for Frito-Lay for more than 33 years and retired in 2004.

He also was on the Missouri Valley City Council for more than seven years, was a past president of the Missouri Valley High School Booster Club and was a member of the Missouri Valley Fire and Rescue Department.

Mr. Dinsmore was an avid bowler in the Missouri Valley Bowling League, bowling for the Sunnyside Café, the Willow Creek Inn and Iowa Feed & Grain.

One of the original organizers of the Missouri Valley Slow Pitch Softball League in the early 1960s, he served as president for many years. The league played teams in Harrison and Pottawattamie counties in Iowa and in Omaha.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Dinsmore of Missouri Valley; children and their spouses, Cherie and Curtis Brown of Belle Plaine, Iowa, Chris Dinsmore of Missouri Valley and Chad and Patti Dinsmore of Urbandale, Iowa; seven grandchildren; brothers and sister-in-law, Jim and Linda Dinsmore of Blair and Randy Dinsmore of Omaha; sisters and brothers-in-law, Linda and Jerry Summers and Patty and John Stueve, all of Missouri Valley; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Don and Loretta Bertelsen of Missouri Valley; Jerry and Judy Guinan of Mobile, Ala., and Robert and Roberta Spires of Lawrence, Kan.; aunt, Frances Nielsen of Cedar Falls, Iowa; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and a host of friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother and sister-in-law, Marvin and Violet Dinsmore.

Memorials may be directed to the Missouri Valley High School Athletic Department or the Fine Arts Department.

Hennessey Funeral Home in Missouri Valley was in charge of arrangements.

Preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Phyllis Dinsmore; in-laws, Roy C. and Ellen Spires; grandparents, Clayton and Jennie Dinsmore, Frank and Christina Rothenay; brother Marvin (Violet) Dinsmore.

Visitation will be Thursday, May 30 from 6pm until 8pm with a prayer service at 6pm at the Christian Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa. Funeral Services will be Friday, May 31 at 10am at the Christian Church in Missouri Valley, Iowa. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the MVHS Athletic Department or the Fine Arts Department.
