Charles Mahaffey, 68

Services for Charles Mahaffey, 68 of Blair, who died Nov. 1, 1996 in Omaha, were Mon., Nov. 4 at First Lutheran Church in Blair. Burial was in Blair Cemetery.

Charles J. Mahaffey was born Jan. 7, 1928 in Columbus, Ohio to Warren and Gertrude Romain Mahaffey. He attended Lake High School in Millbury, Ohio, graduating in 1945. He attended Professional Secretarial School in San Francisco and McCook Community College in McCook, Nebr.

He served on active duty in the Coast Guard from 1946-1975. He served in World War II, the Korean Conflict and in Vietnam as Chief Warrant Officer IV. He was a Lt. Colonel in the Civil Air Patrol.

He served as probation officer from 1977 to 1987 while living in the McCook, Sidney and Blair areas.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church, Washington Lodge No. 21 AF & AM and was a Master of the Lodge in 1986.

He married Ruth Obernodorfer Dec. 22, 1972 in Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Patrick and Michael; a grandson, Shawn Gunby; an infant brother; a brother, Warren D. Mahaffey and a sister, Ruth Bukwell.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; a son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Estela, Edmonds, Wash.; a daughter and son-in-law, Cher and Peter Gunby, Seattle, Wash.; four step-sons and daughters-in-law, Ric and Monica Benzel and Randall and Julie Benzel, all of Elkhorn; Robert Benzel, Omaha and Russell Benzel, Fairbanks, Alaska; brothers, Clark of Edmonds and John of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and sisters, Pearl Vasquez of Toledo, Ohio; Mildred Ford of Pemberville, Ohio and Laura June Kanlan of Toledo; and seven grandchildren.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
