Stephen Maher, 75, Dies of Burns

Native Countian, Cousin of Late James Maher, Succumbs in Omaha

Stephen J. Maher, 75, of Omaha, one time farm homesteader north of Blair, died at St. Catherine’s hospital in Omaha Friday night, a few hours after being severely burned when his pipe set fire to his bed in his room at 2756 California street while he dozed.

Mr. Maher, first cousin of the late James E. Maher of Blair, was born in Washington county, son of Daniel and Catherine Maher. His parents farmed north of Blair on a homestead just north of the William Maher homestead.

Never married, Mr. Maher moved to Omaha 33 years ago, residing with his brother-in-law and sister, the late Mr. and Mrs. Patrick Gillespie. In recent years he had roomed at the home of Mr. Gillespie’s second wife. Mr. Maher has no immediate relatives.

Funeral services were held at 9 a.m. Tuesday at St. John’s Catholic church in Omaha. Interment followed in Holy Cross cemetery here, the Rev. Thomas Carmody of this city in charge of brief graveside rites.

PIONEER DIES IN OMAHA

Stephen J. Maher, a cousin of the late James E. Maher, died at his residence in Omaha last Saturday morning, aged 75 years. He was born and reared in this county and has many old time friends here who will remember him.

The body was brought to Blair last Tuesday morning.
