Marilyn Mangold Dies In Crash

Marilyn Lois Mangold, 54, daughter of Gretchen Mangold and the late Leonard A. Mangold of Bennington, died July 9, 1987 in Des Moines, Iowa, when the car she was driving to work was struck by a truck.

She was born in Omaha May 4, 1933. Her baptism took place May 6, 1934 and her confirmation July 7, 1977.

At the time of her death, she was a member of the Lutheran Church in West Des Moines. Active all through her childhood in the community, she attended Bennington grade and high school, worked in her father’s grocery store, and played the organ for worship services at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She also gave private piano lessons.

She graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1955. After marriage, she lived and worked in Tokyo, Japan; Omaha and Lincoln; and Des Moines, Iowa.

Most recently, she was employed by the Iowa State Education Association in Des Moines. On weekends she served as director for the Des Moines Convention Bureau.

Active in the restoration of Terrace Hill (the Governor’s mansion of Iowa), she also worked as a board member of the landmark Jordan House. She was taking law courses at night school.

She is survived by three sons, Stephen Sass, Jeffrey Mangold and Joel Mangold, all of Des Moines; two grandchildren, Ashley, daughter of Cindy and Jeffrey B. Mangold, and Joel Michael Mangold II, son of Vicki and Joel Mangold; a sister, Sharon Rogers of Pasadena, California; and a brother, Stephen Mangold of Edmond, Oklahoma.

A memorial service was held July 12 at McLaren’s Funeral Chapel with the committal service at Pleasant Hills Cemetery, Omaha, on July 13.

Officiating at the graveside service were Dr. Norman Schroeder, St. John’s Lutheran Church, Bennington, and Dr. Jack Rogers of Fuller Theological Seminary, Pasadena, California.
