Services Held For Walter George Mangold

Walter George Mangold, son of George G. and Pauline Petersen Mangold, was born July 28, 1895 at Millard, Nebraska.

At the age of 3, Walter came to Bennington with his parents. He attended school in Bennington. He went to the Fremont Normal School for his business training. During World War I, Walter Served in the armed services overseas as a dispatcher. In 1923 he started to work in the Bennington Post Office. He served as Postmaster of Bennington for over 40 years.

Walter was united in marriage to Olga Harder on June 6, 1945. One son was born to this union.

Walt will be remembered by a great many people in a lot of different ways. His quiet, modest, unassuming manner and his faithfulness to his work has been a good example to many. His interest and enjoyment of the great outdoors was very much a part of his life. His interest in the outdoor sports and his skill made him a sportsman in the real sense.

Walter was baptized as an infant in the Christian faith. He was confirmed at St. John’s Ev. Lutheran Church on March 31, 1912 and has been an active and supporting member all his life. He enjoyed the fellowship of the Senior Citizens group at the Church. Walter was called to his eternal home very suddenly on Sunday, March 28, while at his home preparing himself for the night’s rest. He was 80 years, 8 months at his death.

He is survived by his wife, Olga; 1 son, George and his wife Beverly; 1 grandson, Richard; 1 brother, Leonard A. Mangold all of Bennington; 1 sister, Irene, Mrs. George Holling of Omaha and El Rancho Bernado, California; nephews, nieces and other relatives and many friends.

Memorial services were held at St. John’s Lutheran Church on Wednesday, March 31, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Norman E. Schroeder officiating. Mrs. Gerald Johnson sang “Rock of Ages” and “Abide With Me”. Mrs. Henry Kniep was the organist. Casket bearers were Vern Kruse, Mark Baty, Melvin Bunz, J. H. Biesendorfer, George Buckler and Warren Littrell. The interment was in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery of Omaha and the Haden Golden Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
