Andrew Paine Buried Tuesday

Mr. Andrew E. Paine passed away at the Memorial Community Hospital Sunday morning, June 6th, at the age of 83 years. He had been in failing health for the past year and was confined to the hospital for the last seven weeks after suffering a broken hip.

He was born June 25, 1881 on a farm near Lyons to Mr. and Mrs. James Paine. His family and friends knew him as “Drew” Paine.

After attending Bellevue College at Bellevue and the University of Nebraska, where he studied Pre-med, he homesteaded in Meade County in South Dakota. Here he married Helen E. Grimm on September 7, 1920 at Rapid City, South Dakota.

They were parents of eight children: Mrs. Verna Vanek, Hildreth Paine, Everett Paine and Carol Paine, all of Blair: Mrs. Lois Widmark of Ivanhoe, Minnesota, Mrs. Evelyn Greene of Silver Springs, Maryland, Mrs. Tessa Haas of Calmar, Iowa, and Lowell Paine of Denver.

Survivors besides his wife, Helen, and eight children are 31 grandchildren: three brothers, Howard and Morris of Lyons, and Leland of Marshall, Texas. Three sisters and one brother preceded him in death.

At the University he was affiliated with the R. O. T. C. and during World War I he trained troops under the Home Guard Training Program for overseas service.

During his 26 years in South Dakota he raised livestock, mainly mules and horses. He helped many of his friends as a veterinarian.

They moved to Lyons in 1937 and in 1942 they came to Blair, where Mr. Paine continued to farm until recent years.

Services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 8th. at the Bendorf Funeral Home and at 2 p.m. at the Presbyterian Church in Lyons. The Rev. Donald Bunk officiated at both services. Burial was in the Lyons Cemetery.

Pallbearers were Gordon Kempcke, Donald (Bud) Jensen, Lester Wheeler, Robert Schroeder, all of Blair; Harry Hammel and L. L. Shumway of Lyons.
