Barbara Ellen Buffington Parrish

Barbara Ellen Buffington was born at Gnadenhutten, Tuscarawas county, Ohio, August 14, 1840. To this union were born five sons and two daughters all of whom, with the husband survive. They are George E. Parrish, of Rosalie, Neb., J. Ross Parrish, of Herman, Theodore Parrish of Omaha, Mrs. P.S. Hopkins, of Omaha, Mrs. A.C. Trevits, of Omaha, Lynn A. Parrish, if Omaha and Jess C. Parrish of Omaha. Mrs. Parrish was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Buffington. Her mother’s maiden name was Johnson. Both traced their ancestry back to colonial days, an ancestor of Mr. and Mrs. Buffington having been one of the early settlers at Jamestown, Va.

Mr. and Mrs. Parrish with Mr. and Mrs. Buffington drove from Ohio to Nebraska reaching Blair late in the fall of 1879. It was a very severe season and four weeks were consumed in crossing the state of Iowa. In the spring of 1881 they came to Herman. The Buffington’s took a farm nearby while Mr. Parrish opened a blacksmith shop in Herman. Several years later, when Mr. Buffington died Mr. and Mrs. Parrish moved to the farm which they operated until the death of Mrs. Buffington after which they moved to Herman where they have resided ever since.

Mrs. Parrish became a member of the Methodist church in Ohio while yet a child and adhered to the faith all her life. She was a consistent worker in church circles up to a few years ago when failing health made it impossible for her to continue her labors.

Her death was due to the ailments incident to old age coupled with the effects of long years of hard work and the hardships and privations which are braved by all pioneers of a new country. She had suffered from a general break down for the past year and had been practically helpless. Though death could hardly have been unexpected the end came without immediate warning. It was painless though she was conscious to the last moment. Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Thursday at 2:30 o’clock. Interment at the Herman cemetery.
