Mrs. Martha Pate died at 1 o’clock Monday morning at the home of her son, Elmer, of diabetes, following an attack of influenza, having been sick less than a week. The funeral service will be held at the Baptist church at 2 o’clock this afternoon, Rev. Williams, a minister of the Church of God from Iowa, officiating, assisted by Rev. Arthur D. Smalley. Burial will be in the Kennard cemetery, where her husband was buried fourteen years ago in May.

Martha Ellen Burgess was born near Garfield, Ky., November 16th, 1855, so was but 67 years of age last November. She was a daughter of the late Wm. Burgess, also of Mrs. L.E. Voorhies, of College View, Neb. She grew to womanhood in the blue grass state and was married there to W. H. Pate January 31st, 1877. They came to this state in 1884 and settled out near Kennard. She is survived by five children, Elmer, of this city, at the present time a member of the city council, Mrs. George M. Christensen, of Washington, Neb., Mrs. E.E. Annin, Ernest and George W., all of Council Bluffs, Ia. She practically raised two orphan boys also, Edward Bramlett, of this city, and Emmett Schumate, of California. Mrs. Pate was an earnest temperance worker and advocate and was for several years president of the W.C.T.U. of this city.

Martha Ellen Burgess was born near Garfield, Kentucky Nov. 16, 1855, and was reared to womanhood in the state of her nativity, and while still claiming that state as her home, was married to Wm. H. Pate Jan. 31, 1877.

About thirty five years ago they came to Nebraska, but later moved to Texas where they resided four years, and then moved back to Kentucky. Here they lived until twenty five years ago when they again moved to Nebraska.

For a number of years they resided on a farm near Kennard. To Mr. and Mrs. Pate eight children were born, five of whom, Elmer of Blair; Mrs. Geo. Christensen of Washington, this county; Mrs. E. E. Annin, Earnest and George W. Pate, all of Council Bluffs, Iowa, are left to mourn the loss of a loved mother who passed away Monday morning, March 12 at 1 o’clock.

The funeral services were held at the Baptist church in this city on Wednesday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. Williams, assisted by Rev. Arthur D. Smalley of the local Baptist church, and interment was made in the Kennard cemetery beside the husband who had already preceded her to the Great Beyond.
