Walter F. Martens, 78

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, February 14 at the Arlington Community Church for Walter F. Martens, 78 of Arlington who died February 10, 1990 at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County in Fremont. Rev. Robert Saunders will officiate.

Military graveside services will be conducted by the Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8332 at the Arlington Cemetery.

Walter F. Martens was born July 9, 1911, in rural Elkhorn. He graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1931.

He served in the United States Army during World War II, from December 17, 1942 to January 8, 1946. He was a medical technician in Europe.

After his discharge, he moved to Arlington. He was a nurseryman at Marshall Nursery near Arlington.

He was a member of the Arlington Community Church and the Arlington VFW Post No. 8332.

He married Frieda Gaines March 3, 1943 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She preceded him in death on May 1, 1973.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ferdinand and Lena Sachs Martens; his wife, one brother, Lawrence; and two sisters, Henrietta McArdle and Irene Alexander.

He is survived by a son, Ronald of Arlington; a daughter, Kathy (Mrs. Roger) Randall of Scribner; a brother, Earl Martens of Fremont; and four grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are Henry Frye, Dennis Decker, Howard Edmondson, Keith Meier, Virgil Frye and Howard Marshall.

Pallbearers are Gary Denison Greg Gaines, Allen Schlapfer, Don Alexander, Willard Meier and Herald Sheets.

Ruby House is organist. Melvin Misfeldt is soloist.

Memorials have been established to the church and the Arlington Rescue Squad.

Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington is in charge of arrangements for the services.

Arlington – Walter R. Martens, 78, of Arlington, died Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, at Memorial Hospital of Dodge County. He was a nurseryman.

Mr. Martens was born July 9, 1911, in rural Elkhorn. He graduated from Elkhorn High School in 1931. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II, from December 1942 to January 1946. He was a medical technician in Europe. After his discharge, he moved to Arlington. He was a nurseryman at Marshall Nursery near Arlington.

He was a member of the Arlington Community Church and the Arlington Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 8223.

He married Frieda Gaines March 3, 1943, in Little Rock, Ark. She died May 1, 1973.

Survivors include a son, Ronald of Arlington; a daughter, Mrs. Roger (Kathy) Randall of Scribner; a brother, Earl of Fremont; and four grandchildren.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Arlington Community Church. The Rev. Robert Saunders will officiate. Visitation will be 5-9 tonight and 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Arlington VFW Post No. 8332 and American Legion Post 71 at the Arlington Cemetery in Arlington.

Memorials have been established to the church and the Arlington Rescue Squad.
