Madelyn May (Martis) Smith, 79, of Tekamah died Tuesday, August 27, 2013, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, August 31, at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. and a vigil service at 7 p.m. at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair. Interment will be in the Blair Cemetery following services.

Madelyn May (Martis) Smith was born September 30, 1933, in Omaha to Charles F. Martis Sr. and Jennie M. (Spangaard) Martis.

She was raised in Omaha and was a graduate of North High School.

On February 3, 1952, she married Samuel Smith Jr. and they made their home in rural Omaha. To this union, four children were born.

From 1970 to 1982, they lived in rural Blair. In 1982, they moved to rural Tekamah. Tekamah was always home to her.

She had many fond memories of growing up and spending time with her grandmother. She always enjoyed participating in extension clubs in Burt and Washington counties. She enjoyed oil painting. She was an active 4-H leader when her children were members.

Mrs. Smith was always an avid supporter of education and made sure that all her children received a college education.

She valued her life on the farm and was a vital and active part in all aspects of the agricultural process.

She is survived by her children, Jane (John) Gorman of Tekamah, Janet (Gerald) Petersen of Merriman, Sam (Ann) Smith III of Batesland, S.D. and Jennifer (James) Petersen of Gilbert, Ariz.; brother, Charles (Ruth) Martis Jr.; 14 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; and many loving cousins, nieces and nephews.

MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL 10am Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Tekamah. Burial will follow in the Blair Cemetery. VISITATION 4pm Friday with family receiving friends from 6-8pm. A Vigil service will be held at 7pm at the Funeral Home.
