ROBERT E. READ, 70

Robert E. Read, 70, of Blair, died Saturday, May 28, 2005, at Methodist Hospital in Omaha of complications from pulmonary fibrosis.

Funeral services were Wednesday, June 1, at Davis-Anderson Funeral home in Girard, Ill. Interment was in the Virden (Ill.) Cemetery.

Robert Eugene Read was born Feb. 12, 1935, in Saline County, Ill., to Arthur and Ruth (Reeder) Read.

He graduated with a bachelor of science degree in agriculture from Southern Illinois University and rose through the management ranks of several corporate agricultural conglomerates. He and his wife, Virginia (Murphy) Read, lived in Illinois, Minnesota, Iowa, Florida and Nebraska. Mr. Read retired as the plant manager of the Blair anhydrous ammonia terminal in 2000.

He will be remembered for his kindness, patience, and his green thumb, as well as his skill with all forms of wood craftsmanship.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia; daughters and sons-in-law, Dr. Patricia Read-Williams and Matthew Williams of Auburn, Wash.; Julia Read-LaBelle and Peter LaBelle of Beaverton, Ore.; Susan Read-Miller and David Miller of Bonner Springs, Kan.; brothers, John Read of Encinitas, Calif.; James Read of Dallas, Texas; sisters, Mary Topper of El Dorado, Ill.; and five grandchildren. His sixth grandchild will be born June 3, 2005.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials are suggested to the Blair Hospital or the American Arthritis Foundation.

Sievers-Sprick Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
