Charley Paulsen

Early Friday morning the many friends of Charley Paulsen were informed that he had passed away late Thursday evening, just an hour before midnight. A year ago he had a very serious appendicitis operation, which kept him in bed for a long time, and it was feared he would not be able to be about. Finally he left the hospital and seemingly was doing fine, only the wound was rather slow in healing and after ample time would not heal satisfactorily. The physician was consulted and after some observation it was deemed best to perform a slight operation to improve conditions. Chas. was in the best of hopes to be back on his farm again in about eight days and thus begin or direct his spring work. However, our plans are often and suddenly changed. Carl Chris Paulsen, son of Chris H. and Margaret Paulsen, was born near Ft. Calhoun in this county, February 21, 1894. A few years later his parents bought a farm near Blair where the family was blessed with another child, a girl. Years rolled by and with careful management this family was very successful in their occupation and had their children educated. The son was a friend of books and therefore after his school days did much reading. He had a special desire for engineering and automobiles. Some ten years ago he took a post-graduate correspondence course besides assisting his father. Completing this study and passing an excellent examination he then settled down to farm in 1914 but still lived with his parents. On May 18, 1921, he was united in marriage with Miss Lillian Brandt, of Ft. Calhoun. This most happy union was but a very short duration, only about two and three-fourths years. Last week Wednesday, he was again taken to the Blair hospital, operated upon and did fine. But Thursday he began failing and grew weaker from heart trouble every hour until he passed away at 11 p.m. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 from the home of his parents on west Nebraska St., thence to Trinity Lutheran church, on Lincoln and 2nd Sts., Rev. H. Werning delivering a very appropriate sermon to a large audience, which filled the church and addition. We are told it was the largest funeral in that church for many years and all heard much to remember. His sudden death is mourned by his widow, Mrs. Chas. Paulsen, his dear parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chris Paulsen, his loving sister, Mrs. Henry Wulbern and family and a host of friends.
