#1-22 Jan., 1903 - Blair Republican - Alma (Wishart) Reed

Mrs. Ed. Reed of Mo. Valley, who has been under treatment at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Wishart of this city for several weeks, underwent an operation for tuberculosis of the bowels by Drs. Hansill of Council Bluffs, Leake of Fremont and Mortlock of this city on Tuesday afternoon. The Republican and many relatives and friends will be filled with sorrow by the announcement that the patient died at 1 p.m. today at the residence of Dr. Mortlock. It is a hard blow for her aged parents, young husband and little Mildred, the only child. The funeral will be from the residence of her parents in So. Blair on Saturday.

Mrs. E.M. Reed, nee Elma Wishart, who came to Blair for medical treatment last November, died at the residence of Dr. Mortlock last Thursday at one o’clock p.m. Mrs. Reed came to Blair with her parents in 1878. A few years later going with them to Mo. Valley, Iowa, where in 1891 she was married to E.M. Reed of that city. She had been a sufferer for several years from a complication of diseases and has taken medical treatment from Omaha and Mo. Valley doctors. She was operated on by Fremont and Council Bluffs surgeons assisted by Dr. Mortlock on last Tuesday and found her disease to be tuberculosis of the bowels. She was too weak to survive the shock of the operation and commenced failing rapidly about 11 o’clock and before her mother and sisters could reach her bedside she was unconscious.

Funeral services were held on Saturday at 10 o’clock from the residence of her parents, Rev. Richards of the Baptist church officiating and the remains laid to rest in the Blair cemetery. Her husband and one daughter Mildred, aged seven years, her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.P. Wishart, and two sisters, Mrs. A.J. Taylor and Mrs. Annie Beard survive her. Mrs. F.M. Reed and W.O. Reed, mother and brother of Mr. Reed and H.K. Thayer, a cousin, were present at the funeral, also C.H. Deur and A. Edgecomb of Mo. Valley and E.C. Longman and W.R. Adams of Logan, Iowa. Mrs. Reed at the time of her death was 32 years of age and leaves many friends here and in Mo. Valley who extend to the bereaved family the deepest sympathy.

#3-29 Jan., 1903 - Blair Courier - Elma (Wishart) Reed Mrs. E. M. Reed died at the residence of Dr. Mortlock last Thursday noon, being too weak to recover from an operation which was performed on Tuesday for tuberculosis of the bowels. She had been a sufferer for about a year with an unknown malady and on the 20th of last November she came over from Mo. Valley to be treated by Dr. Mortlock, making her home with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. P. Wishart. Dr. Mortlock assisted Drs. Hansil of Co. Bluffs, and Leake of Fremont in the operation which was resorted to only when it became evident that otherwise recovery would be impossible. The funeral was held at the Wishart home at 10 o’clock last Saturday, Rev. Richards officiating. Besides her husband and a daughter 7 years old, she leaves two sisters, Mrs. A. J. Taylor and Mrs. Anna Beard. Messrs. A. Edgcomb, C. H. Deur and W. O. Reed and Mesdames C. L. Geddings and T. L Reed were over from Mo. Valley to attend the funeral. Also C. C. Longman and W. R. Adams of Logan, Ia. and H. R. Thayer, a cousin, from Grand Junction, Ia. Mrs. Reed was but 32 years of age and for about two years was an employee on this paper when W. H. Eller was running it.
