James A. Schmidt, 74

James A. Schmidt, 74, of Tekamah, died Thursday, August 28, 2003, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. Interment will be in the Tekamah Cemetery.

Visitation began Monday, but will also be held for an hour prior to service at the church.

James A. Schmidt, 74, of Tekamah, died Thursday, Aug. 28, 2003, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.

Funeral services were Tuesday, Sept.2, at the First Presbyterian Church in Tekamah. Interment was in the Tekamah Cemetery.

James Allen Schmidt was born March 30, 1929, to Allen and Mamie (Salzman) Schmidt at their home east of Tekamah. He received his education in the country schools near Tekamah and Tekamah High School. He left school at the age of 17 to begin earning a living.

On Jan. 2, 1949, he married Ethel Miller at Logan, Iowa.

Mr. Schmidt lived most of his life in Tekamah, with the last years at his farm west of town. He held many occupations and excelled at everything at which he tried his hand. He loved his years on the Missouri River running a tug boat, operating heavy equipment in his construction business and building houses and handcrafting furniture. He also enjoyed hunting, gardening and motorcycle riding. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren were a special delight to him.

He is survived by his daughters and sons-in-law, Suzanne and John Hardy, and Cheryl and Jerald Palmer, and son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Wendy Schmidt, all of Tekamah; eight grandchildren and their families; 10 great-grandchildren; mother, Mamie Schmidt of Tekamah, brother, Charles Schmidt, also of Tekamah; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Dale Fender of Napa, Calif., and Gloria and Ray Shumake of Tekamah.

He was preceded in death by his father, Allen, and a brother, Joseph.

Hamel-Peck-Pelan Funeral Home in Tekamah was in charge of arrangements.
