COUNTY’S FIRST RURAL MAIL CARRIER, LONG A HERMAN MAN, DIES AT 78

Claude L. Reid, 78, of Herman, who in 1900 became Washington County’s first rural mail carrier, died Tuesday night at Doctor’s hospital in Omaha after a recurring illness. He had carried mail out of Herman until his retirement in 1932.

The body was returned to the Truhlsen undertaking parlors, and funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Herman Baptist church, the Rev. A.W. Clarke of the Herman Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be Herman Cemetery, with Masons in charge of graveside rituals. Pallbearers will be Charles S. Cameron, Edward Swanson, Wilbur Lowe, John Jackson, D.W. Rutledge and Charles Hovendick.

Mr. Reid was born in Omaha October 24, 1864, and on November 25, 1891, was married at Fremont to Miss Gertrude Lydick of Fontanelle. They resided at Fontanelle for some time and in 1900 moved to Herman, their home since. They observed their 50th wedding anniversary two years ago.

Mr. Reid was a member of Omaha Seymour Camp No. 16, Woodmen of the World, and of Landmark Lodge No. 222, A.F. & A.M.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; four sons, Earl C. and George Reid of Herman; Gerald Reid of Omaha; and Pfc. Byron Reid of Camp San Luis Obispo, California; two daughters, Mrs. L.D. Long (Alice) of Herman; and Mrs. Pat Sherwood (Marian) of Omaha. There are four grandchildren, also two sisters, Mrs. Maude French of Benson and Mrs. Lydia Bell of San Antonio, Texas.
