John Paul Masters was born July 2, 1934, in Arlington to Paul and Bessie Masters. He was baptized and confirmed at Emmaus Lutheran Church in Kennard.

He attended school in Kennard, and graduated in 1952. After graduation, he joined the U.S. Navy for three years.

When he returned from the service, he worked in a gas station, worked at a steel company, and was a truck driver for several years, and also farmed.

In 1980, he found out he had muscular sclerosis. His life changed at that time. As a truck driver, he loved his eight-track tapes, so he started listening to them. He also watched many movies on his VCR. His favorite actor was John Wayne; he probably had nearly every movie the actor ever made.
