Richard P. Paulsen, 61

Richard P. Paulsen, 61, died at the Audubon County Memorial Hospital in Audubon, Ia, on Dec. 13, 1988.

Richard Paulsen was born on Dec. 4, 1927, in Laurel as the son of Francis and Christine (Steen) Paulsen. He attended Arlington High School and graduated in 1945. He was a member of the Arlington Congregational Church.

On Oct. 19, 1948, he married Beverly Osterman of Arlington.

After serving in the Korean Conflict, he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont and received his Masters and Specialist Degrees in Administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

His professional background included teaching at Arlington High; he was the High School Principal at Sidney and Riverton, Ia; and the Superintendent of schools at Sidney from 1959-1964 and at Griswold from 1965-1969. He served as Superintendent of the Audubon Community Schools since 1969. He was a NEA Life Member and belonged to the I.A.S.A., A.A.S.A., and S.A.I.

Mr. Paulsen attended the First United Methodist Church in Audubon and was a member of the Audubon Lions Club, the V.F.W., American Legion and the Nishnabotany Lodge No. 153A.F. and A.M. at Sidney.

Dick served as an Iowa Representative to the A.A.S.A. Advisory Board; a member of the State School Finance Study Committee, the I.A.S.A. Professional Relations and Ethic Committee and was appointed by then Governor Robert Ray to the Professional Teaching Practices Commission for six years. Dick was elected to the State Committee of N.C.A.; and in 1988 received the Iowa High School Athletic Association Administrative Award and was initiated into the Walt Whitman Club.

Mr. Paulsen was preceded in death by his parents.

Survivors include his wife Beverly of Audubon, Ia.; his children and their spouses, Mark and Cassie Paulsen of Rockford, Ill., and Alica and Jim Allen of Muscatine, Ia.; his grandchildren, Emily and John Paulsen of Rockford, Ill., Alison and James Richard Allen of Muscatine, Ia; his sisters, Dorothy Platt, Audrey Rockwell, and Shirley Neises all of California; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Harry Dallas and Mary Osterman of McCook, Ne,, and Roscoe and Beverly Osterman of Fremont; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were conducted by Pastors George McMullen, Harvey Quandt, and Andrew J. Hofer on Friday, Dec. 16 at the Audubon High School.

Interment was in the Arlington Cemetery. Military Graveside Services were conducted by the V.F.W. and American Legion, Arlington Post. No 8332.

Honorary casket bearers were: Paul Bjorkgren, Keith Hopkins, Allan Jacobsen, William Madsen, Donald B. Miller, Fred Searls and Pete Testroet. Casketbearers were Richard Evans, Stephen May, Wayne Moreland, Richard Olenius, Perry Roberts and Derold Tessman.

Funeral arrangements were handled by Kessler Funeral Homes in Audubon, Ia.
