Body of Anna Matthiesen Buried Here Monday

The body of Anna Matthiesen, who died at Montreaux, Switzerland, the latter part of October, arrived in Blair Monday and was at once taken to the cemetery where brief funeral services were conducted by Rev. A. E. Marsh, of the Episcopal church. A quartet of friends, consisting of F.H. Claridge of Omaha, Gifford Dixon, Miss Mary Cook and Ethel Mead, sang at the obsequies, and all that was mortal of this excellent woman was laid away in the family lot near the place where she was born and reared and where she had spent the greater part of the forty-two years of her life.

Several months ago Miss Matthiesen, accompanied by her mother, Mrs. F. H. Matthiesen, and her two sisters, Misses Meta and Bertha, all of whom had resided in Los Angeles for several years, left on a European trip, first coming to Blair to visit their only son and brother, Ed Matthiesen. They had been gone several months, when Miss Matthiesen had a relapse from an illness of several years ago, and passed away as stated above.

Ed Matthiesen went to New York last week to meet his mother and sisters who were returning with the body. They arrived on the 8:45 train from Missouri Valley on Monday.

Mrs. Matthiesen and daughters will remain in Blair for a time to rest from their long trip and visit friends in their old home.

Former Blair Lady Dies Abroad

A cablegram was received by Ed Matthiesen last Sunday announcing the sad news of the death of his oldest sister, Anna, who, with her mother, and two sisters, was touring Switzerland.

Mrs. Matthiesen and daughters, Misses Anna, Meta and Bertha left Blair about the first of May for a few months tour of Germany and other European countries. They had been in Italy and were in Switzerland at the time of Miss Anna’s death. She had not been well for some time but the exact cause of her death is not known to relatives here.

The deceased was born and reared in Blair graduating from the city schools and was about forty years of age.

With her mother and sisters she had lived in California for a number of years prior to leaving last spring for Europe.

A later message received Tuesday conveys the news that the party will leave November 14 on the boat Reliance and will bring the body with them.

Mr. and Mrs. Ed Matthiesen plan to meet them in New York when the time arrives. The many old friends of the family and the former school mates of the deceased extend sympathy to the remaining relatives at the sad home coming.

MISS ANNA MATHIESEN DIES IN SWITZERLAND

A cablegram was received Sunday by Ed Matthiessen of this city stating that his sister, Miss Anna L. Matthiessen, had passed away that day at Montreal, Switzerland.

Miss Matthiessen had been in delicate health for the past two years, her trouble being superinduced by flu during the epidemic.

Anna L. Matthiesen was the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F. H. Matthiessen - the father having passed away several years ago - and was born in Blair July 29, 1880, and was 42 years and 3 months at the time of her demise. She received her early education in the public schools of Blair, graduating from the High School in the class of 1899. She also graduated from Gertrude House, a school for young ladies in Chicago in 1904.

A few years ago Miss Matthiessen in company with her mother and two sisters left Blair to make their permanent home in Los Angeles, Calif. Early in the summer they left for a European trip, and were in Switzerland when the subject of this sketch became worse and death ensued as above stated.

The body will leave Hamburg, Germany, accompanied by the mother and sisters, on the SS Reliance, and will reach Blair the latter part of the month, and burial will be made in the family lot in the Blair cemetery.

This is a sad ending to the trip, which was hoped to bring health to the invalid. There survives, her mother, two sisters, Meta and Bertha, and an only brother, Ed Matthiessen, an aunt, uncle and other near relatives, besides a large number of close friends who will regret to learn of the passing of this fine woman.

No arrangements will be made for the funeral until the exact date of the arrival of the body is known.
