Curtis Charles Schafer, the son of Adam and Bertha (Fritsch) Schafer, was born April 11, 1922 at Argo, MO. He grew up at Argo and Leslie, MO, where he farmed for a few years. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII from December 8, 1944 to May 2, 1946. Curtis married Wilma Hoeneman on April 8, 1951 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Arlington, NE. They moved to the Telbasta, NE area in 1957 and then moved south of Fontanelle in 1960, where he farmed until 1990. Curtis was and agent and director for Farmers Mutual United Insurance Company at Wahoo, for 22 years and held various state offices. He was vice-president and director of the Nebraska Farmers Reinsurance Company for 16 years.

He was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church at Arlington, where he was an elder and trustee, and served on various boards of the church. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #71 of Arlington.

Curtis passed from this life on Friday, September 8, 2006, at the Fremont Area Medical Center in Fremont, NE, at the age of 84 years, 4 months and 28 days. He is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Deb Schafer of Nickerson; daughters and son-in-law, Carolyn and Dean Maurer of Fremont, Linda Schafer and Marlene Schafer, both of Arlington; sister, Velma Reed of Sullivan, MO; 3 grandsons, Brian and Brent Maurer and Chad Schafer.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wilma, who died March 31, 2002; an infant son, Mark; brother, Andrew; and 2 sisters, Ava Mitchell and Ellen Tayloe.

Curtis C. Schafer, 84, of Nickerson, died Friday, Sept. 8, 2006, at Fremont Area Medical Center.

Funeral services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 12, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington. Interment will be at St. Paul’s Cemetery with military graveside services conducted by members of V.F.W.Post No. 8332 and American Legion Post No. 71 of Arlington.

Visitation began Monday at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home, but is also being held one hour prior to services at the church on Tuesday.

Curtis C. Schafer was born April 11, 1922 in Argo, Mo., to Adam and Bertha (Fritsch) Schafer. He grew up at Argo and Leslie, Mo., where he farmed for several years.

He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from Dec., 8, 1944 to May 2, 1946. He moved to Telbasta in 1957 and moved south of Fontanelle in 1960, where he farmed for 30 years.

He was an agent and a director for Farmers Mutual United Insurance Co. at Wahoo for 22 years and held various state offices. He was the vice president and director of Nebraska Farmers Reinsurance Co. for 16 years.

On April 8, 1951, he married Wilma Hoeneman at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Arlington.

Mr. Schafer was a member of St. Paul’s Church, where he was an elder and trustee and served on various boards of the church. He was also a life member of American Legion Post No. 71 of Arlington.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Deb Schafer of Nickerson; three daughters and a son-in-law, Carolyn and Dean Maurer of Fremont, and Linda Schafer and Marlene Schafer, both of Arlington; three grandsons; and a sister, Velma Reed of Sullivan, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Wilma, in 2002; an infant son, Mark; brother, Andrew Schafer, and two sisters, Ava Mitchell and Ellen Tayloe.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church of the Nebraska Childrens Home at Omaha.
