Rites Today for Mrs. E.W. Schmidt, 71

Long Active in Church and Lodge Work, Mrs. Schmidt Died Monday

Mrs. E. W. Schmidt, 71 Blairite more than half a century, died Monday at the family home, 62 West Colfax St., following a lengthy illness which had necessitated her hospitalization for a considerable time last year.

She was the wife of E.W. “Bill” Schmidt, Blair monument man and former city councilman. Mr. Schmidt himself has been seriously ill at his home for more than a year.

The funeral, with arrangements in charge of the Campbell Mortuary, is being held at 2 p.m. today at First Methodist Church, of which Mrs. Schmidt was long a member and active worker. The Rev. Sidney L. McCaig, pastor, is officiating. Interment will be in Blair Cemetery.

Born in Alsace

Mrs. Schmidt, as Adelle Weygand, eldest daughter of Antoine and Virginia Weygand, was born in Rhinau, Alsace, France, July 24, 1876. She was a relative of General Weygand, famed French war figure of World Wars I and II.

When 16 years old she came to America and lived in Philadelphia for five years. In 1897 she came to Blair, her home since. She and Ernest William Schmidt were married Sept. 14, 1899.

Mrs. Schmidt was active in Methodist affairs for nearly 50 years. She had served as a church school teacher, sponsor of the Junior League and for three years as president of the Ladies Aid Society. She was a member of the Royal Neighbors Lodge, Myrtle Camp No. 2788, and of Welcome Rebekah Lodge No. 27 of Blair. She also belonged to the Past Noble Grand Club.

Surviving the well-known Blair woman are her husband; a son, Ernest A. Schmidt of Blair; a daughter, Miss Anna V. Schmidt of Calumet City, Ill; three sisters, Mrs. Wilhelm Kahler of Lennox, S.D., Mrs. Bert Scollen of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Mrs. William Murphy of Arlington, S.D.; six brothers, Charles, Theodore and August Weygand of Minnesota, Conn of Hoboken, N.J. and Emil and Joseph in Alsace, France; and many nephews and nieces.

Adele Weygand, eldest daughter of Antoine and Virginia Weygand, was born in Rhinau, Alsace, France July 24, 1876. She came to America at the age of 16, and lived for five years in Philadelphia. In 1897 she came to Blair where she has lived for over 50 years. As a girl she lived on the banks of the Rhine.

On September 14, 1899 she was united in marriage to Ernest William Schmidt. To this union two children were born.

Mrs. Schmidt has been a member of the Methodist church in Blair for almost 50 years, and has served as church school teacher, sponsor of the Junior League and for three years as president of the Ladies Aid society. She held membership in the Royal Neighbor lodge, Myrtle Camp No. 2788, and in the Welcome Rebecca lodge No. 27, Blair, of which she was a member of the Past Noble Grand club.

Mrs. Schmidt represented the finest of Christian womanhood, living her faith in her relations with others, patient and cheerful in times of trouble, always considerate of others. Her friendships were deep and abiding. Within the family circle and among her friends and neighbors she will always be remembered with deep appreciation.

There survives her passing her husband, William; a son Earnest A., Blair; a daughter, Anna V. of Calumet, Ill.; three sisters, Mrs. Wilhelm Kahler, Lennox, S.D.; Mrs. Bert Scollen, Sioux Falls, S.D.; Mrs. William Murphy, Arlington, S.D.; six brothers, Charles, Theodore and August, living in Minnesota; Conn of Hoboken, N.Y.; Emil and Joseph in Alsace, France, many nephews and nieces and numerous friends.

Services are being held this Thursday afternoon from the Methodist church under the supervision of the Campbell Mortuary with Rev. Sidney L. McCaig officiating. Interment will be in the Blair cemetery.
