Marlin Matzen, 69

Services were held Saturday, July 24 at the First Christian Church for Marlin Matzen, 69 of Blair who died at Memorial Community Hospital July 21, 1993. Military graveside services were held in the Blair Cemetery.

Marlin R. Matzen was born May 10, 1924 at Kennard, Nebraska to August and Anna Hansen Matzen. After graduating from Kennard High School in 1941, he worked for his father on the family farm for several months, at which time he went to work for the Blue Goose Store in Blair.

In March, 1943, he entered the Army and took his basic training at Camp Joseph T. Robinson in Little Rock, Arkansas. After basic training he was sent to school in Illinois and later shipped to the 87th Infantry Division at Fort Jackson, South Carolina.

In September of 1944, he was assigned to the ninth Infantry Division and sent overseas until being discharged in February of 1946. He received three battle stars and the Bronze Star.

Upon his return from military duty, he worked on the family farm and then enrolled in Van Sants School of Business in Omaha.

In June, 1947, he married to Nila Thompson at Kennard, Nebraska.

He was a bookkeeper of the Nebraska-Iowa Oil Company. In 1956, he went to work as a traveling auditor for the Champlin Petroleum Company. In 1984, he worked for the Taylor Quik Pik in Fort Calhoun, retiring in 1992. He was a member of Kennard American Legion, Blair Veterans of Foreign Wars and First Christian Church.

He is survived by his wife, Nila; one daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Larry Blaydes, Blair; a son and daughter-in-law, Bradley and Angie Matzen, Fremont; one son, Jeffrey Matzen, Blair; grandson, Kyle Matzen; brother, Arnold Matzen, Kennard and one sister, Lleanna Mrs. Sam) Wright of Kennard.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
