O. H. Godsey, 65, Dies In Herman

Former Jeweler Dies Sunday, Two Months After Heart Attack

Seriously ill since suffering a heart attack in February, Oscar H. Godsey, 65, former Herman jeweler and optician, died at his home in Herman Sunday.

Native of Tina, Missouri, Mr. Godsey was born November 7, 1873, and as a youth became a hardware store apprentice at Tina. In 1898, when he was 24 years of age, he came to Herman, where he secured employment at the D. H. Harper hardware store. In later years he operated a jewelry and optical business and about two years ago became an employee of the Gamble store at Herman.

Mr. Godsey was married to Miss Effie Hilsinger at Herman August 4, 1901. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Thelma Granden of Verdigre, Nebraska; Mrs. Eledyce Helms of Omaha and Mrs. Marjorie Kroger of Herman; two grandchildren, four brothers and seven sisters.

Mr. Godsey has been a member of the Baptist church at Herman since 1908. He was a member of Landmark lodge No. 222, A.F. and A.H., and belonged to the A.O.U.W. lodge.

Funeral services were held at the Baptist church in Herman at 2 p.m. Tuesday, conducted by the Rev. Thomas J. Reese of Jefferson, Iowa, formerly pastor of both the Herman and Blair Baptist churches. The Rev. A. W. Clarke, pastor of the Herman Methodist church, assisted. The Masonic lodge of Herman attended the funeral in a group.

. Interment was in Herman cemetery. Pallbearers were E. W. Burdic, William Adams, Waldo Hancock, Gilbert Potadle, John H. Johnson and Ray Triplett.

HERMAN BUSINESSMAN PASSES

O. H. Godsey, well known businessman and resident of Herman for the past forty years, died at his home in Herman Sunday morning at 8:30. About two months ago he suffered a heart attack from which he never rallied.

Oscar Henry Godsey was born on a farm near Tina, Carrol county, Missouri November 7, 1873, and died at his home in Herman Sunday, April 16, 1939, aged 65 years, 5 months and 8 days. When a young man, he learned the tinners trade and worked in a hardware at Tina, Missouri before coming to Herman in 1898. He was employed at the D. H. Harper hardware in Herman for eleven years. Mr. Harper sold the business to T. W. Hungate, and he continued to work for him until he sold out. Later he conducted a business of his own, a jewelry and optical store. For the past year and a half he has been associated with the Gamble store in Herman. He was honorable and honest in his dealings, and was respected by all who knew him. He loved flowers and plants, and has for many years devoted all of his spare time to raising them for the market and for friends.

He was a member of the Masonic lodge No. 221 A.F. & A.M. of Herman and of the A.O.U.W. Thirty years ago he was converted and baptized into the Baptist church. For many years he taught a Sunday School class of boys. He was interested in the Boy Scouts, and a number of years ago assisted with a troop here.

On August 4, 1901 he was married to Miss Effie Hilsinger of Herman. Three daughters were born to them, Mrs. Thelma Granden of Verdigre, Nebraska; Mrs. Eledyce Helms of Omaha; and Mrs. Marjorie Kroger of Herman. Besides the wife and daughters, he is survived by two granddaughters, Lois Helms and Judith Kroger, four brothers and seven sisters, other relatives and many friends.

Funeral services were held at the Herman Baptist church at 2:00 o’clock Tuesday, April 18. They were conducted by Rev. T. J. Reese of Jefferson, Iowa, a former pastor and a close friend. He was assisted by Rev. A. W. Clarke of the Methodist church. The Masonic order conducted their impressive rites. At the services a quartette composed of C. R. Gray, Fred Robertson, Francis Forsberg and L. D. Long sang, with Mrs. G. F. Lowe at the piano. The pallbearers were E.W. Bardic, William Adams, Gilbert Potable, Waldo Hancock, Ray Triplett and E. R. Harper. Interment was made in the Herman cemetery.
