Betty Morse McMillan, 85, of Hendersonville, N.C., died Friday, Sept. 27, 2013, at Elizabeth House in Flat Rock, N.C., after a brief illness.

A memorial service was Sept. 30 at Trinity Presbyterian Church in Hendersonville.

Betty Morse was born in Blair and graduated from Blair High School.

She attended Hastings College, where she met and married Loyce "Tex" McMillan. They graduated in 1949.

She later received her M.S. degree in English literature from CT State College.

She was a full-time mother until her fourth child began school. She then started a foreign student exchange support program in Rolla, Mo., and taught English in high school and junior college.

Upon retirement, she volunteered teaching English to people from other countries, from whom she learned an appreciation of diverse cultures. She also taught yoga for many years, loved gardening and sang and played the piano her entire life.

Mr. and Mrs. McMillan were married for 68 years.

She is survived by her husband, Tex, of Hendersonville; daughter Maralee of Flat Rock; three sons: Tom of Denton, Texas, Jon of New York City and Mike of Rabat, Morocco; brother Charles Morse of Ocala, Fla.; three living grandchildren; seven nieces and nephews; and cousin Richard (Shirley) Robeson of Blair.

Memorials can be directed to the Elizabeth House in Flat Rock or Heifer International.
