Irene “Ruby” Lomme, 101, formerly of Spalding, died Thursday, Oct. 3, 2013, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Community in Blair surrounded by her family.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 7, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding. Interment will follow at St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Sunday at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary in Spalding with a 7 p.m. wake service. Visitation will continue from 8:30 to 10 a.m. Monday morning at Dolce-Scheef Mortuary.

Irene "Ruby" Kehler was born Feb. 17, 1912, in St. Edward to Sam and Frances (Kukenbach) Kehler.

She graduated from Sargent High School in Sargent in 1930.

Following high school, she worked as a housekeeper for several years before returning home to nurse her mother through a lengthy illness.

On Nov. 23, 1943, she married Raymond A. Lomme at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Spalding.

The couple farmed south of Spalding for many years, until retiring and moving into Spalding in 1970. After moving to town, Mrs. Lomme worked at the Spalding Livestock Market Café for several years.

She entered Friendship Villa in Spalding in 1989. When Friendship Villa closed in 2011, she moved to the nursing home in Blair near her daughter.

The couple had four children. One daughter died in infancy.

Mrs. Lomme was active in St. Michael’s Church in Spalding and was involved in the Women’s Circle. She enjoyed gardening and embroidery, and was known as an excellent cook and homemaker. Family was important to Ruby and she enjoyed spending time with her immediate and extended family members. Later in life, she enjoyed reading and television.

She is survived by her children: Carol Hultberg of Blair, John Lomme of Columbus and friend Vickie Fritzges of St. Edward and Janet Lomme of Tipp City, Ohio; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond in 1974; her infant daughter; sisters: Alta, Emma, Mildred, Pauline and Orvia; and brothers: Clyde, Elmer, Earl, Mike and Bud.
