Mary Evelyn Rasmussen, 91, of Blair died Monday, Oct. 7, 2013, at her home in Blair.

Mary Evelyn Frye was born July 30, 1922, at Cheyenne Wells, Colo., the third child of Charles R. and Zella (Maguire) Frye. She was introduced to the world as “Sal” by her father in a telegram sent to family at her birth, when he announced, “Sal’s here” after the popular song at that time “My Gal Sal.” That was her nickname throughout her life. She spent her early years around the Valley and Elk City area.

Eighteen-year-old Mary met the love of her life, Robert Harold Rasmussen, on her family’s dairy farm, since he was a milk inspector at that time. They were married December 17, 1941, and were the parents of five children: Carol Jean, Diane Rae, Ross Harold, Robert Lee and Nancy Denise. The family lived near Blair and the surrounding area.

Mrs. Rasmussen spent most of her life as a devoted homemaker and farm wife. She tended her home and children, as well as the farm animals, doing many chores, raising a garden and helping in the field.

Being the adventurous sort, the couple spent years in a cabin in Minnesota where they came to know Christ through the Young family, who befriended them there.

Some of her best memories included the time spent traveling over the road with her husband, driving his flag car while he delivered mobile homes to dealerships across the surrounding states. She could tell many tales of their adventures and misadventures on the road.

When the couple moved to Blair, she owned and operated a women’s clothing store at Blair Plaza. She cherished the friendships she made with women frequenting her shop.

She was a devoted caregiver, taking her mother-in-law into her home to care for her the final year of her life. And when her husband was diagnosed with ALS, she faithfully attended him at home until his death Sept. 28, 1995. During this time she forged a bond with the neighborhood women she spent time with at the “condo coffees.” Silver Chords group also was a great support to her during this time of caring for her husband.

Grateful for having shared her life are three daughters: Carol (Gordy) Whitcomb, Diane (James) Hansen and Nancy (Willard) Tierney; two sons: Ross (Sharon) Rasmussen and Robert “Bob” Rasmussen; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; stepchildren and step-grandchildren; a sister, Betty Owings; and many other relatives and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; a sister, Charline Cowles; brother Robert “Bud” Frye; and great-grandchildren, Jessica Rasmussen and Nathaniel Shaffer.
