MARGARET ALEXANDER

Margaret M. (Colligan) Alexander, 89, of Lyons died Wednesday, April 20,2011.

She was born May 2, 1921, at the family home one mile east of Lyons to William and Mary Agnes (Rafferty) Colligan. She attended Lyons Public Schools and was a member of the class of 1939. Upon graduation, she moved to Omaha, attended Creighton University and graduated from St. Catherine's School of Nursing in 1942. After becoming a registered nurse, she worked in hospitals in Omaha, Santa Monica, Calif., and finally Blair.

She married Wallace Alexander on August 26, 1948. They lived on a farm west of Lyons where she farmed with his brothers. After being a stay-at-home mom for about 20 years, she decided that she wanted to return to nursing. She started working at St. Francis Hospital in West Point and finally at Oakland Heights for 15 years until her retirement in 1990.

Her husband preceded her in death in 1992. In 2002, she decided that she wanted to move from her home in Lyons to an assisted living facility in Omaha. She then moved to Logan Valley Manor in July 2003 and finally to Oakland Heights in January 2011.

She was a lifelong member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include : two sons, Bill of Pasadena, Calif., and John (Lucy) of Gypsum, Kan.; daughters, Trish (Roy) Rempe of Superior, Jean (Ron) Burbridge of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Peggy Alexander of LaVista, Cathi Alexander of Papillion, Mary Lou (Phil) Noonan of Burlington, Iowa, Camilla (Albert) Dyke of Safford, Ariz; 18 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a great-great grandchild.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

The funeral Mass was this morning at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Lyons with the Rev. Paul Ortmeier officiating. Burial was in Lyons Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the family.

Pelan Funeral Services was in charge of arrangements.
