Victoria “Elaine” Cady, 93, died Sunday, Oct. 13, 2013, at her home in Arlington.

A memorial service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, at Arlington Community Church in Arlington. Private family interment will be at a later date at Memorial Cemetery in Fremont.

Victoria "Elaine" Elmore was born Feb. 6, 1920, in Fremont to Thomas H. and Victoria (Meberg) Elmore. Her parents were teachers and educators and musically trained.

She graduated from Fremont High School in 1936 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1940 from Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. While at Midland, she was a soloist in acapella choir under Dr. Oscar Lyders, and was in theater, dramatics and special trio coached by Dr. Norman Goodbrod. In both her freshman and senior years she was chosen most beautiful coed.

After leaving Midland, she served on the Alumni Board for a term.

She taught vocal music from elementary through high school in North Bend. She attended school in Chicago at the American Conservatory of Music, studying voice and harmony with Dr. Theodore Harrison for a summer semester.

The following summer she was employed in the adjusting department at Marshall Fields in Chicago.

On Sept. 3, 1943, she married Dr. John “Jack” Cady in Fremont.

She moved to Arlington right after her marriage. She was a den mother for eight years (during which time her son Jon became an Explorer Scout and son Tom an Eagle Scout).

Mrs. Cady, along with Marilyn Otto, was the secretary and bookkeeper for her husband’s veterinary business, in which they were responsible for the operation of the first in-state, two-way radio system that covered a 30-mile radius. Supporting her husband’s profession, she was a life member of the American Veterinary Medical Association and past president of the Nebraska Veterinary Medical Association.

She directed the First Congregational (UCC) Church choir for more than 20 years, now known as the Arlington Community Church UCC of which she was a 70-year member. She taught Sunday school, sang for funerals and weddings and gave voice lessons.

Serving her community, she was a 56-year member and past president of PEO Sisterhood Chapter EX of Fremont, volunteered 10 years for Red Cross, and was the Arlington representative for the Fremont Area Community Foundation. She loved to play bridge. She was happy to have her grandchildren learn to swim at the Arlington Pool and had happy memories of getting to know her 10 great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Cady was grateful to have 10 years of travel with her husband to Sun City, Ariz., being a Husker fan and to be part of a family who were boosters in the Arlington, Washington County and Fremont areas.

Dr. Cady preceded her in death on Jan. 13, 2000.

She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Jon R. Cady and Charla “Chari” Felton-Cady of Arlington and Tom and Nancy Cady of Blair; five grandchildren: Stephanie (Eric) Roberts, Catherine (Shawn) Cole, Angela (Shannon) Harney, Matthew (Jennifer) Cady, Alicia and Mike Dorau; two step-grandchildren, Jason (Emily) Buddenberg and Bridget Buddenberg; 10 great-grandchildren: Erica and Taylor Roberts, Riley Lindberg, Chloe, Keegan and Piper Cole, Tyson, Jaden, Taryn and Jaxon Harney; two step-great-grandchildren: Alex and Sabrina Buddenberg.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. John "Jack" Cady and one brother, Thomas H. Elmore Jr.

Memorials may be directed to the Arlington Community Church, Arlington Community Foundation or the donor’s own choice.
