Julius J. Backman, 87, of Blair, died Saturday, May 31, 2003, at Memorial Community Hospital in Blair. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 3, at First United Methodist Church, with graveside services at the Blair Cemetery.

Julius John Backman was born March 14, 1916, in Genoa to John and Amanda (Segleboom) Backman.

He attended school in Genoa and later farmed in the area.

He entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving as a motor vehicle driver and mechanic. He served in Egypt, Libya, Tunisia and Italy and was honorably discharged in 1945.

Mr. Backman moved to Blair upon his return from the service. He worked for Kelly Ryan Equipment Co. and later for Fruehauf Inc. in Omaha, where he retired in 1980 after 25 years.

On March 6, 1949, he married Lois Williby in Blair.

He is survived by his wife; four children and their spouses, Karen Backman, David Backman, and Pat and Steve McAllister of Blair, and Jacque and Anthony Howe of Taylor Ridge, Ill., and five grandchildren; Lauren Backman; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bill and Lena Mae Williby, Fae Williby, Daisy Williby and Alice Hibbs of Blair, Marveline Eggison of Portland, Ore., and Ardith Reinke of Neligh, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ann Dischner and Elsie Nelson, and a brother, Eric.

Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church.

Campbell-Aman Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
