A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 26, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Tekamah United Methodist Church for James E. Cornish, 95. Jim’s earthly life ended October 16, 2013, at the Good Shepherd Nursing Home in Blair, Nebraska.

Jim was born November 2, 1917, in Oakland, Nebraska, to William and Laura (Fowle) Cornish of Tekamah. He attended and graduated from Tekamah School.

On March 24, 1940, he married Gayle Pearce and they were married for more than 72 years. In 1941, Jim began farming with his father and continued to farm for the remainder of his working life. He was one of four owners of Tekseed Hybrid Corn Company for 30 years, and served as president. He was on the Drainage Board for 25 years.

Jim belonged to the United Methodist Church in Tekamah. He was a 57-year member of the Masons, going on to belong to Scottish Rite, York Rite, Shriners and Rawhide Nobles. He was a past Worshipful Master of Masonic Lodge #31 of Tekamah. He held the position of Deputy Grand Custodian and traveled around northeastern Nebraska during that time. He presided over innumerable Masonic funeral services in several counties over the years. He was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, and served as Worthy Patron during the year Gayle served as Worthy Matron.

Jim was preceded in death by his wife, Gayle; his parents and sisters, Evelyn Harr, Shirley Kinsey and Wilma Petersen.

Survivors include his sister, Rosamond Haughton of Dallas, Texas; sons, Bill (Pam) Cornish, Tim (Debbie) Cornish of Tekamah, Joe Cornish of Sacramento, Calif.; daughter, Kay (Bill) Phinney of Atlanta, Ga.; grandchildren, Laura Cornish of Louisville, Colo., Nancy (Scott) Exstrom of Valley, Neb., Angela (Cameron) Iwan of Douglas, Neb., Julie Cornish, Lisa Cornish, Allison (Mike) Jones all of Tekamah, Scott (Leslie) Scheve of Raleigh, N.C., Tom Scheve of Asheville, N.C., Stephanie (John) Jordan of Sidney, Neb., Shana (Tim) Gregory of Omaha, Neb., Marisa Jordan of Tekamah; great-grandchildren, Meredith and Jessica Exstrom, Henry and Samuel Iwan, Madelyne and Lucas Jensen, Will Jones, Evan and Claire Scheve, Zoe Scheve, Ava, Eden, Claire, Conor and Vivian Jordan, Ethan, Wyatt, Josie Tilson, Brittney, Kennady and Savannah Gregory, Miles, June and Colt Jordan.

Immediately following the memorial service, a brief dedication ceremony will take place at the Tekamah Cemetery, after which refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall of the Tekamah United Methodist Church.

Memorials toward the Tekamah United Methodist Church will be appreciated.

Masonic service: Phillip Lorenzen and Tekamah Masonic Lodge #31, A. F. & A. M.
