Carl F. Schattauer Jr., 89, died peacefully at home in Blair on Tuesday, Oct. 22, 2013, with his wife, Alice, at his side.

He had been a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and its predecessor bodies for 61 years.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, Oct. 28, at First Lutheran Church in Blair with a lunch to follow. Following cremation, his ashes will be interred in the Prayer Garden at First Lutheran on All Saints Sunday, Nov. 3, at the conclusion of the 10:15 a.m. service. Visitation is Sunday, Oct. 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Blair. A vigil service will begin at 7 p.m.

Carl Frederick Schattauer Jr. was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., on June 19, 1924, the first child of Carl F. Schattauer Sr. and Jane A. (Porter) Schattauer.

He was baptized at Penn Avenue Presbyterian Church on April 26, 1925. He spent his early years in Pittsburgh’s East Liberty neighborhood before his family moved to Des Moines, Iowa. There he was confirmed in Christian faith at St. John’s Lutheran Church.

He graduated from East High School in 1941 and shortly thereafter entered the Army to serve in the Pacific theater during World War II, in the Philippines and for a time after the war, in Japan.

Upon his return home, he married his beloved Alice M. Knudsen on May 19, 1946, at Highland Park Lutheran Church. Carl and Alice met in elementary school and shared a rich married life together for 67 years.

He attended Drake University and graduated in 1949 with a bachelor’s degree from the College of Commerce and Finance. He took a job as a salesman for Remington Rand, but after a mission meeting at church, his life suddenly changed course, and he entered Trinity Seminary at Dana College (later to merge with Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa) and studied to become a pastor in the United Evangelical Lutheran Church.

In 1952, he was ordained in Albert Lea, Minn., and became the first non-Scandinavian pastor in that church body of Danish ethnic heritage. Throughout his ministry, he faithfully served congregations in Iowa and Nebraska as church bodies merged first to form the American Lutheran Church (1960), then the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (1988): St Mark’s Lutheran Church, Storm Lake, Iowa (1952-1957), where he was the founding pastor; Our Saviour’s Lutheran Church, Council Bluffs, Iowa (1957-1964); Bethesda Lutheran Church, Ames, Iowa (1964-1981); First Lutheran Church, Blair, (1981-1988).

He served terms as secretary of the Iowa District, ALC, and on the Dana College Board of Regents. He was also active in social ministry organizations, notably on the boards of Ames Youth and Shelter Services and Lutheran Social Services of Iowa, including six years as president.

Pastor Schattauer concluded his years of active ministry as assistant to the bishop, Nebraska Synod, ELCA (1988-1994).

Throughout his years of ministry, he helped to nurture the call to ministry in a number of people and enjoyed mentoring fellow pastors, lay people and congregations in their ministries of worship, witness and service.

In retirement, the couple lived in Omaha and in Blair, near their daughter Martha Sorensen, whose family has been a strong and loving, daily presence in their lives. Throughout their life together, the couple enjoyed frequent visits with family and friends and the opportunity to share in the lives of their children and grandchildren. Many will testify to their remarkable capacity to open themselves to others and to give encouragement, wise counsel and the lift of a laugh along life’s way.

He is survived by his wife and life partner, Alice; by their four children, Thomas (Paula Carlson) of Northfield, Minn., Paul (Marcia) of Oak Park, Ill., James (Sage Lewis) of St. Paul, Minn., and Martha Sorensen (Tom) of Blair; eight grandchildren: Peter, Anna, Spencer and Lucas Schattauer and Kai, Stephanie, Emma and Andrew Sorensen; a brother Neal (Eunice) of Englewood, Fla.; a sister-in-law; several cousins; and many nieces and nephews.

Memorial gifts may be given to First Lutheran Church, Blair, or to Wartburg Theological Seminary, Dubuque, Iowa.
