Roger A. "Bud" Clough, Ed.D., 78, of Omaha, died Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013, peacefully while visiting relatives in northern Wisconsin.

Services were Monday, Oct. 21, at St. Luke United Methodist Church in Omaha.

Roger A. "Bud" Clough was born May 22, 1935, in Uehling to Tony and Bernice Clough.

He was a 1952 graduate of Uehling High School. In 1956, he graduated from Midland College in Fremont with a BS in education and received his master's and doctoral degrees in education from the University of Nebraska in 1959 and 1972, respectively.

His career took him to Polk in 1956 as a coach and teacher and then to Yutan in 1959, where he was superintendent of schools. In 1963, he became principal at Everett Junior High in Lincoln.

Starting in 1966, he served several school districts as their superintendent: Ord, York, Mason City, Iowa, back to Lincoln and then Pattonville School District in St. Louis County, Mo. He retired in 1997.

In 2000, he served as interim superintendent for the Arlington Public Schools.

Dr. Clough was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, cousin and friend. He was an eternal optimist, always finding the good in people and situations. He cared: he found ways to encourage family, friends, strangers and co-workers to see the silver lining in every opportunity or obstacle.

He never met a stranger and had a unique ability to find connections with people he met.

He was an avid high school sports and student activities fan, and often donned a blazer or suit in the color of his home team. He and his wife, Margaret, enjoyed watching all the children's and grandchildren's activities.

He was also a competitor. Whether it was golf, sheepshead card game, handball or cribbage with the nieces, nephews and grandkids, he always played to win (he might have lost a few intentionally with the kids, but he would never admit it).

He was also a leader. He served a four-year term on the St. Louis Lambert Airport Commission from 1993-1997. He assisted Sanford N. McDonnell, CEO and chairman of the board for the McDonnell Douglas Corp., to establish the CHARACTERplus K-12 program.

He won the Missouri Superintendent of the Year award in 1997 and served as president of the Missouri Association of School Administrators for 1996-1997. He was also a participant in the St. Louis Federal Desegregation Plan, 1988-1997.

He is survived by his wife, Margaret Clough; three sons: Marc Clough (Pam) of Marble Rock, Iowa, Mike Clough (Arlene) of Urbandale, Iowa, and Marty Clough (Amy) of Zurich, Switzerland; seven grandchildren: Robert Clough (Bri) of Hartford, Conn., Lindi Nelson (Ben) of Des Moines, Iowa, Katy Clough of West Des Moines, Charlie Clough of Chicago, Ill., Madeline Clough, at the University of Iowa, Sofie Clough and Bo Clough, both of Switzerland; two great-grandchildren, Thomas Nelson and Max Nelson of Des Moines; brother David Clough (Donna) of Lake Bluff, Ill.; cousins: Carolee Laughren, Jim Realph (Pam) and Sharon Landholm; and his buddy, Preston Ricker.

He was preceded in death by his sister, LaNelle Clough.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Luke Teen Center.
