#1-Blair Courier 12 March 1903

Mrs. J. W. Mayle took her son John down to Omaha last Monday to have Dr. Impe remove an obstruction from his throat. Chloroform was administered and the bit of peanut that had lodged there was removed that same evening and he seemed to be getting along all right. He had taken several drinks of water and one of milk which showed that the operation was successful, but at about 4 o’clock Tuesday morning he suddenly became rigid and passed away without another struggle. The body of the little fellow was brought up at 2:48 and taken direct to the sorrow stricken home. The funeral will be held at 3 o’clock this afternoon at the Episcopal church. Mrs. Ray Lippincott will come on from Las Animas, Colo., for the funeral and Mr. and Mrs. Fred Hoffman, of Armour, S. D., are also here. Johnie was about twelve years of age, the eldest of the two boys, and was a very bright and promising little fellow. The sympathy of the entire community is extended to the sorrowing family in this their first bereavement.

#2-12 Mar., 1903 - The Pilot - John Mayle

The sad news that was brought to Blair last Tuesday morning that little Johnnie Mayle had died after having stood the trial of having a peanut removed from his esophagus spread a gloom over the many friends of the family who had taken it for granted that his trouble was of no serious nature. He was a brave little fellow and had stood his share of suffering on account of throat trouble caused from drinking lye when only eighteen months old. Last Saturday he swallowed a peanut which lodged in his throat and Monday he was taken to the Central hospital, Omaha, to have it removed and until a few moments before he died he was supposedly getting along as well as could be expected. His death occurred at about 4 o’clock Tuesday morning. He was an active little fellow, and was a favorite at home as well as among his playmates. His sudden death is a sad shock to the family who have the sympathy of the entire community in their bereavement. The funeral will take place Thursday afternoon at 3 o’clock from the Episcopal church. ~~~Obituaries courtesy of the Nebraska Washington County Genealogical Society.
