Dale R. Cates, 64, of Logan, Iowa, died Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2013, at Alegent Creighton Health Community Memorial Hospital in Missouri Valley, Iowa.

Services were Saturday, Oct. 26, at Logan Christian Church in Logan. Interment was in Harris Grove Cemetery near Logan.

Dale R. Cates was born Oct. 24, 1948, to Roy and Miriam (Unmack) Cates at their home near Harris Grove Cemetery.

He graduated from Logan High School in 1967. He then attended a mechanical trade school in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

He worked for Louie Matt Anderson Ford for 10 years and Jack’s Conoco Gas Station for a few years, and then retired from Atchley Ford in 2004.

On Oct. 26, 1978, he married Judith Emswiler, and lived in the Logan area all of his life.

He liked antiques, IH tractors, gardening, his pets, including his beloved dog, Molly, and visiting with friends at the local coffee shop. He loved teasing and pulling pranks on his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Judith Cates of Logan; son Marlon (Peggy) of Omaha; daughter Melanie Ellis (Eric) of Blair; stepson Brian Cave (Lisa Winther) of Magnolia, Iowa; mother Miriam Cates of Logan; sister Betty Gaede (Glenn) of Enid, Okla.; brother Terry Cates of Logan; mother-in-law Ethel Emswiler of Logan; four grandchildren; sister-in-law Nancy Mundt (Verdell) of Council Bluffs; brother-in-law Tom Emswiler (Dona) of Logan; sister-in-law Sherry Emswiler of Council Bluffs; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

He was preceded in death by his father, Roy N. Cates; father-in-law Charles Emswiler; and brother-in-law Vincent Emswiler.

Logan Memorial Chapel in Logan was in charge of arrangements.
