Donnie Edgar Sperling, 82, of Arlington passed away Saturday, Oct. 19, 2013, at his home.

He was born Dec. 24, 1930, in Arlington to Edgar and Lilly (Scheer) Sperling. He grew up in Arlington on a turkey farm. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, north of Arlington. Donnie graduated from Arlington High School in 1949. He worked with his dad raising and processing turkeys until entering the service in 1952. He served in the U.S. Army and in Korea during the Korean War from Feb. 25, 1952, to Feb. 9, 1954. He then became a cabinet maker and finish carpenter for Gnuse Construction.

Don married Ardeth Kuhls on July 22, 1952, at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Hooper.

Don was an active member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and gifted to the church many handmade church furnishings. He was an active member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8332 and American Legion Post 71, both of Arlington.

Survivors include: his wife, Ardeth Sperling of Arlington; daughters, LuAnn Blea (and husband, Steve) of Arlington and Susan Johnson (and husband, Pete) of North Platte; brother, Milo Sperling (and wife, Maureen) of Seward; sisters, Nancy Drum (and husband, Bud) of League City, Texas, and Ardes Vance (and husband, Ray) of Pasadena, Fla.; four grandchildren, Nicole and Josh Bruck, Aaron Callaway and Jamie Blea; and two great-grandchildren, Amelia and Greta Bruck.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a son, Brent Sperling.

The funeral will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, north of Arlington, with the Revs. Rick Kanoy and Jason Duley officiating. Visitation with the family receiving friends will be from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Reckmeyer-Moser Funeral Home in Arlington. Visitation will continue one hour prior to service time Thursday at the church. Burial will be in St. Paul’s Cemetery in Arlington with military honors conducted by members of VFW Post 8332 and American Legion Post 71, both of Arlington.

Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Arlington.
