Early Settler Dies May 30

Came To County In 1868 From Germany. Knew Early History

Another old settler of Washington County answered the call of the grim reaper last Thursday, May 30. Following a heart attack, Mrs. Marie Rohwer Mehrens died suddenly at the residence of her brother, Henry Rohwer of Fort Calhoun, where she had lived for the past several years.

Mrs. Mehrens was born in Germany April 4, 1859, so was past her 81st birth anniversary at the time of her death. She came to Calhoun in 1868 with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mehrens, and two brothers, Carl and Henry Rohwer.

On May 9, 1884, she was married to Jacob Mehrens and they immediately began farming. To them three children were born: Kate and Claus of Calhoun and Henry of Broadwater, Nebraska. These with three brothers, Carl and Henry of Calhoun and Chris of Lincoln, all join in a common grief over her death.

The husband, Jacob Mehrens, passed away in 1911, just after they had moved from the farm to Calhoun and retired from active duties.

Funeral services were held in the Calhoun Presbyterian church at two o’clock Saturday with Rev. Ralph E. Donaldson of Omaha in charge and interment was made in the Calhoun cemetery.
