Eldon T. Meier, 78

Eldon T. Meier, 78, of Nickerson, died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at the A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

The family will be receiving friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 17, 2000, at Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont. Visitation is one hour prior to the funeral service.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 18, 2000, at the Salem Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. The Rev. Charles Bichel will officiate. Burial will be in the Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Fontanelle.

Eldon T. Meier was born March 11, 1922, to Ernest and Bertha (Kerkhoff) Meier, on a farm southwest of Herman, where he grew up. He moved to a farm near Nickerson in 1947, where he farmed until retiring in 1986. After his retirement, he did custom farming.

He served in the U. S. Army during WWII from Nov. 15, 1942 to Jan. 9, 1946, in the Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

On Sept. 10, 1943, he married Nadine E. Bradford in Fontanelle.

He was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church in Fontanelle, where he served on the church council, the church cemetery board and was an usher for many years; a member of FOE 200 of Fremont; the Lions Club and the VFW Post 7419 and the volunteer fire department, all of Nickerson; the Nickerson Coop Elevator Board; the Nickerson and Logan View School boards and was part of the planning committee for the organization of Logan View School.

He is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Ron and Jessie Meier of Carlisle, Pa.; daughter and son-in-law, Becky and Rick Mulkey of Flagstaff Ariz.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, who died Nov. 3, 1999; and three brothers, Milton, Harlan and Gerald Meier.

Memorials are suggested to the Salem Lutheran Church in Fontanelle. Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont is in charge of arrangements.

The funeral for Eldon T. Meier, 78, of Fremont will be 11 a.m. Tuesday at Salem Lutheran Church in Fontanelle.

He died Thursday, April 13, 2000, at A. J. Merrick Manor in Fremont.

Meier was born March 11, 1922, and grew up on a farm south west of Herman. He married Nadine Bradford Sept. 10, 1943, in Fontanelle. In 1947, he moved to a farm in Nickerson, where he farmed until retiring in 1986. He did custom farming. He was a World War II veteran who served Nov. 15, 1942-Jan. 9, 1946, in the United States Army. He served in Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe. His wife died Nov. 13, 1999.

He was a member of Salem Lutheran Church, where he served on church council, church cemetery board, and was an usher, Fraternal Order of Eagles 200 of Fremont, Lions Club, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7419, and volunteer fire department, all of Nickerson, Nickerson Co-op Elevator Board. He served on Nickerson and Logan View school boards and was part of a planning committee for the organization of Logan View School.

Survivors include: a son, Ron (and wife, Jessie) Meier of Carlisle, Pa.; a daughter, Becky (Mrs. Rick) Mulkey of Flagstaff, Ariz.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by three brothers.

The Rev. Charles Bichel will officiate Tuesday’s service. Visitation will be until 9 tonight with family receiving friends 6:30-8 tonight, all in Moser Memorial Chapel in Fremont, and will continue one hour prior to service time in the church. Military graveside services will be conducted by Fremont Honor Guard of V.F.W. Post 854, and American Legion Post 20. Burial will be in Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery in Fontanelle.

A memorial has been established to Salem Lutheran Church.
