#1-February 13, 1913- Arlington Review Herald- Sophia (Niggeman) Meierhenry

The funeral of Mrs. Wm. Meierhenry whose death on Wednesday, Feb. 5, was briefly mentioned in the Review Herald last week, was held from the family home in Fremont. Interment taking place at Telbasta, near which place the deceased had spent nearly all of her married life; burial being preceded by a short service in the German Evangelican church at Telbasta, of which association she had been an active member.

Miss Sophia Niggeman was born at Lippe Detmold, Germany, June 6, 1848, and was therefore aged 65 years and 8 months at the time of her death. She was married to Wm. Meierhenry March 14, 1870 and two days later the young couple started for the United States, coming direct to Washington County, reaching Fontanelle April 10. They resided in that place but a short time, moving onto a farm two and one-half miles east of Telbasta where they resided until 1906, when they moved to Fremont, where they have since resided. Nine children were born to the worthy couple, and besides the husband, five sons and one daughter survive her, three children dying in infancy. Death was caused by cancer of the stomach, from which disease she has been a sufferer for a number of years, but she was confined to her bed for only about a month prior to her death. Coming here 42 years ago, she passed through all the privations of the pioneer, raised a family one daughter and six stalwart sons and nine grandchildren all of whom were present to pay their last sad respects to the departed wife and mother, and pray it be said with Cowper, in his beautiful ode “Walking With God.” “ What peaceful hours we once enjoyed. How sweet their memory still! But she has left an aching void the world can never fill”.

#2-The Enterprise 14 February 1913

Mrs. Wm. Meierhenry, sr., who was spoken of in the last issue of the Enterprise as being very ill, passed away at her home in Fremont on Wednesday, Feb. 5th. Mrs. Meierhenry was one of Washington county’s pioneer settlers. She was born in Germany, June 6, 1848, and in 1870 was married to Wm. Meierhenry and immediately came to this county, arriving in Fontanelle on Aug. 10th of that year, and shortly afterward settled on a farm 2 ½ miles east of Telbasta. Here they lived until 1906 and amassed a comfortable competency for their old age. In 1906 they moved to Fremont where they have since resided. Nine children were born to them of which three died in infancy. Those surviving are Henry, William, Gustav, Fred and Ed, all living on farms just east of Telbasta, and Mrs. Brechlin, living in Fremont. Mrs. Meierhenry was a good, honest, christian woman and had the respect of all who knew her. She was a faithful attendant of her church and lived up to its teachings in every respect. Her whole life was an example of industry, patience and righteousness. The husband who survives her is of feeble health but has the blessing of honorable children who will give him the tenderest care in his declining years.
