Bernadine A. Root, (92), of Aitkin, Minn., formerly of Blair, died on Thursday, July 16, 1998, at the Aicota Health Center in Aitkin.

Services were Monday, July 20 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Pastor David Becker officiating. Burial was in the Valley Cemetery in Shakopee, Minn.

Bernadine A. Anderson was born Jan. 13, 1906, in Chicago, Ill., to Oscar and Amelia (Bleich) Anderson. She was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith. She moved with her family from Chicago to Burt, Iowa, and then to Eau Claire, Wis. She attended schools in Eau Claire.

She married Frank Root in Eau Claire on Aug. 28, 1982. They moved to New Richland, Minn., where they lived until moving to Aitkin in 1950.

They lived in Blair for about 10 years where they were administrators for the Good Shepherd Lutheran Home.

She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, the Ladies Aid, the quilting club, the Bible study and was a former Sunday school teacher for more than 25 years. The church and her family were her life.

She is survived by a daughter, Carol Shields of Aitkin; a son and daughter-in-law, Gordon and Jean Root of Aitkin; a sister, Esther Gronfor of Shakopee, Minn., two granddaughters and two great granddaughters; several nieces and nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank, in 1971; her parents; and two brothers, Irving and William.

Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin was in charge of arrangements.
