QUARRY WORKER KILLED WHEN ROCK TRUCK SLIPPED OFF RAMP

STRUCK BY ROCKS ROLLING FROM TRUCK WHICH OVERTURNED

Hemet Callen, of Plattsmouth, was pronounced dead on arrival at Blair Hospital Thursday afternoon, following an accident at the Fort Calhoun Stone Company near Fort Calhoun. He was taken to the hospital by the Fort Calhoun Rescue Squad.

The accident occurred at the firm’s west quarry about 3:55 p.m. Thursday. Apparently the off-highway hauling truck which Mr. Callen was driving, tipped over on a ramp at the quarry. It is now known whether Mr. Callen jumped from the vehicle or was thrown. Some huge rocks which were loaded in the truck rolled out and hit him, and it is believed he was killed instantly.

Mr. Callen was an experienced quarry worker, having worked for the Fort Calhoun Stone Company for 15 years. He was quite well known in the Calhoun vicinity.

He was 62 at the time of his death.
