Ethel W. Schneider, 87

Ethel W. Schneider, 87, died Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2008, at her home at Autumn Pointe in Fort Calhoun.

Funeral services were Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Omaha. Interment was at Flower Hill Cemetery.

Ethel Wilhelmina Behrendt was born Aug. 25, 1920, in Benson, to Otto and Meta (Neuhaus) Behrendt. She grew up in Douglas County where she attended grade school at 156th and Maple streets, and graduated from Benson High School in 1939 with a teaching degree.

On June 21, 1945, she married Clarence Schneider at Zion Lutheran Church in Omaha. She took the train home and her husband went overseas to serve in World War II.

The couple adopted a son, Steve, in 1954 to make their family complete.

The Schneiders have made their home in Omaha, on the farm at 156th and State Street, Omaha, Blair and Fort Calhoun.

Mrs. Schneider taught school for three years in the J-2 Douglas County Country School and worked for pediatrician, Dr. Robertson, for a year before she and her husband moved to the farm in 1947. She then became a full-time farm wife and mother. She enjoyed tending her garden, canning, quilting, traveling and baseball.

She is survived by her husband, Clarence, of Fort Calhoun; son and daughter-in-law Steve and Sally, of Lincoln; two grandchildren; a sister, Elda Misfeldt of Blair; sister-in-law, Margaret Behrendt of Omaha, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two infant sisters; a brother, Arthur Behrendt; and sister, Roma Lamp.

Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church, Alegent Hospice or Nebraska Children’s Home.

Hadan-Golden-Reichmuth in Bennington was in charge of arrangements.

Visitation Friday 4-8 p.m. Zion Lutheran Church (142 & Ida St). Funeral Saturday 10:30 a.m. at the church. Interment Flower Hill Cemetery. Memorials to the church, Alegent Hospice or Nebraska Children’s Home.
