Walter I. Nelson Jr., 83, of Leawood, Kan., died Saturday, Nov. 23, 2013.

At his request, there will be no funeral service. His ashes will be interred in a private family gathering at Johnson Co. Memorial Gardens of Overland Park, Kan.

Walter I. Nelson Jr. was born Jan. 23, 1930, to Dr. W. I. Nelson Sr. and Enid Nelson in Arlington.

He graduated from Herman High School in 1947. He attended the University of Nebraska and Dana College before enlisting in the Army in 1951 where he served in the 11th Airborne Division and received his discharge with the rank of master sergeant in 1954.

He then attended Kansas State University and graduated in 1956.

He married Shirley Nash at the First United Methodist Church in August 1955 in Blair.

He spent his career in sales and retired from Mattress City.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Resurrection in Leawood and Legion Post 153, Earl Collier Post.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; four daughters: Shari (Pat) Connealy of Reston, Va., Suzi Roberts of Overland Park, Michelle (Tom) Jarnevic of Lee's Summit, Mo., and Elizabeth (Greg) Glass of Overland Park; son Brad (Tamara) Nelson of Columbia, Mo.; seven grandchildren: Maggie Connealy, Jessica (Mohit) Jaiswal, Ryan Roberts, Luke Jarnevic, Andy Jarnevic, Taylor Nelson and Austin Nelson; sister Marilyn French of Scottsbluff; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Robert and Lorraine Nash of Concord, Calif.; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dr. Donald and Dr. Darlene Nash of Lafayette, Calif.; and many nieces and nephews.

The family suggests memorials be directed to Kansas City Hospice, 12000 Wornall Rd., Kansas City, MO 64145.

The Cremation Society of Kansas & Missouri, Prairie Village, Kan., was in charge of arrangements.
