The funeral of Mrs. George Matteson was held at the Methodist church Friday afternoon and was largely attended. There were many floral offerings and among them a wreath furnished by the Woodmen of the World. Mrs. Matteson was born in New York in 1839, and came to Nebraska in 1869. Forty years ago the second day of July she was married to George Matteson and to the union eight children were born, four boys and four girls, all of whom are grown to man and womanhood. The entire family were in attendance at the funeral. The Pilot joins the many friends of the family in extending them sympathy in the loss of a faithful and loving wife and mother. Rev. Marley preached the funeral sermon.

#2-12 July, 1905 - Blair Courier - Mrs. George W. Matteson

MRS. GEORGE W. MATTESON DEAR

Mrs. George W. Matteson, one of the early settlers of Washington county, died at her home on Park street on Wednesday, July 5th, at the age of 66 years and 13 days, after a lingering illness. She had an attack of pneumonia a year ago last March, since which time she had been an invalid, though her health had been poor for a number of years. She was confined to her bed about three weeks immediately before dissolution took place, and though her suffering was prolonged and great, she was uncomplaining and cheerful to the last, expressing herself prepared and ready to meet her Maker.

Mrs. Matteson was born in Richmond, Ontario county N.Y. June 22, 1839. She was married to Geo W. Matteson, who survives her at the age of 64 years, at Lysle, N.Y., July 2, 1865 and came with him to Nebraska in 1869, settling first on the old homestead eight miles west of Blair. She had been a resident of Blair for the past 21 years, and was well known by all the early settlers.

Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her death eight children, four sons and four daughters, viz: The eldest, Mrs. W. H. Barton and W. R. Matteson who reside in Blair; Mrs. J. C. Goodwin of Waterloo, Neb.; Mrs. H. F. Pearce of Emerson, Neb.; C. E.Matteson of Shawnee, Oklahoma; O. V. Matteson of Omaha; and Geo. Matteson, Jr. and Ella Matteson who still remain under the parental roof. All of them were present at the funeral. After toiling and caring for her loved ones for forty years, rearing all her children to manhood and womanhood, she was first to answer the final roll call and sever the tie that bound the family circle together on earth. “Mother” is the sweetest word lisped by the human tongue and the heart naturally goes out to those who had to bid earthly farewell to this one.

The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Markley from the M. E. church on Friday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The floral offerings were numerous and most beautiful, and a large concourse of sorrowing neighbors and friends followed the remains to their last resting place in Blair cemetery.

In this case one affliction has followed another. On July 4 the day previous to the death of the mother, the father suffered a stroke of paralysis affecting the brain, and though able to be about requires the care and attention of a child. He sleeps a greater part of the time and scarcely seems to realize that his life companion has been taken away. Mrs. Mary Allbery is nursing and looking after him.
