Hazel I. Akerlund, 92

Hazel I. Akerlund, 92, died Friday, January 7, 2005, at the Nye Pointe Health & Rehab Center in Fremont. Funeral services were Monday, Jan. 10, at the Ludvigsen Mortuary Chapel. Interment was in Fremont’s Memorial Cemetery.

Hazel I. (Haines) Akerlund was born May 23, 1912, in Virden, Ill., to William and Myrtle (Neher) Haines. She grew up in Virden, where she graduated from high school. She moved to Chicago to work after graduation.

On Nov. 20, 1938, she married Val Akerlund in Chicago. After their marriage, the couple moved to a farm near Valley and Fremont. In 1989, they moved into Fremont.

Mrs. Akerlund had been involved in the Dodge County Extension Service for several years, and had been active in a garden club and a bunko club. For many years, the Akerlunds were involved in the NFO (National Farm Organization.)

She is survived by two daughters, Phyllis Lupher of Boise, Idaho, and Judith Ann Clapper of Grayland, Wash.; a son and daughter-in-law, Richard and Kathleen Akerlund of Aurora; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Virginia Martin of Illinois.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1989, and two sisters.
