#1-4 July, 1901 - Blair Courier - Harold Fairchild

Harold, the seven year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Fairchild, was drowned in a fish pond on their farm east of Kennard last Friday afternoon. He was “seeing who could dive the longest” when his lungs filled with water and he never came to the surface until he was brought too late to resuscitate. Not only the parents, but the whole community, was stricken with grief over the sad event, and turned out almost in masse to the funeral held at the Methodist church in Kennard on Sunday.

The sad gloom of death passed over the happy home of Mr. and Mr. Geo. Fairchild last Friday, taking in its wake their bright little 8-year-old son, Harold. The little fellow was bathing in a pool near the house with a number of playmates and ventured out too far in the deep water and was drowned. His little sister made a heroic attempt to save him, but she too, came near going under and in order to save her own dear little life, she was compelled to make a hasty retreat for the shore. Mr. Chris Rathmann, passing along at the time jumped in and brought the lifeless body to land. Dr. Pruner was immediately summoned and everything was done to bring the unfortunate little fellow back to life, but his spirit had gone to the God who gave it. Harold was a bright little boy and will be greatly missed by his schoolmates. At the home circle his smiling face will be seen no more.

Funeral services were held at the M.E. Church Sunday morning at 11 o’clock and the remains laid to rest in the Kennard Cemetery. The heartbroken parents have the sympathy of the entire community.
