Merlyn J. Lutz, 76, of Panora, Iowa, died Saturday, Nov. 21, 2009 at the Panora Nursing and Rehab Center.

Memorial services are 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 27, at the Twigg Funeral Home in Panora. Interment of her cremains will be in Blair at a later date.

Merlyn Joyce Hannah was born March 14, 1933, in Blair to David and Florence (Knight) Hannah.

She graduated from Blair High School in 1951.

In 1952, she married Robert F. Lutz, also of Blair. In 1960, the couple moved to Perry, Iowa, where she resided until recently entering the nursing home in Panera for end-of-life care due to a battle with cancer.

Among Mrs. Lutz’s proud accomplishments in life was her graduation from Mercy School of Nursing in 1963 as a licensed practical nurse. She loved to paint and was known for her beautiful, hand-sewn quilts. She loved cooking and was often asked to make her “magic soup” when her grandchildren were young and not feeling well.

She was a member of St. Martin’s Episcopal Church in Perry.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Robin Lutz of Benton, Ark., and Patrick and Kay Lutz of Panora; five granddaughters; 11 great-grandchildren; a sister, Donna Husk of Herman; best friend, Bill Jensen of Perry.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert, in 1999; and brother-in-law, Lyle Husk.
