Lt. Col. Frederick Joseph Wittlinger, 92

Lt. Col. Frederick Joseph Wittlinger, 92, of Blair, died peacefully on Saturday, Dec. 7, 2013, the 72nd anniversary of Pearl Harbor, at Carter House in Blair.

Mass of Christian burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 11, at St. Francis Borgia Catholic Church in Blair. Interment with full military honors will be in the Blair Cemetery following Mass. Visitation will be 2-8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 10, at Campbell-Aman Funeral Home in Blair with a vigil service at 7 p.m.

Frederick Joseph Wittlinger was born Nov. 10, 1921, in New York City to Anna M. and Frederick C. Wittlinger.

He received his education at St. Anne’s Academy and Manhattan College, New York City, the University of Maryland, Texas A&M and Command and General Staff College.

He joined the Army Corps of Engineers on Jan. 23, 1939, as a private and rose to the rank of lieutenant colonel in 1963. His wartime service included 1943-45 World War II European Theatre, Battle of the Bulge. He also served in Korea 1950-51 and Vietnam, 1965-66.

He retired from military service in August of 1968. He was employed by Gibbs & Hill Inc. Engineers 1961-81, including as project engineer of the Fort Calhoun Nuclear Power Plant.

He met Peggy Rounds, 2nd Lt. Army Nurse Corps, on Victory in Europe Day, May 8, 1945. They were married June 13, 1945, in Sissonne, France, June 13, 1945.

They adopted two daughters, Joyce and Janet, in March 1952 in Fort Belvior, Va. The family traveled extensively as part of his military service.

His military decorations included two Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Army Commendation Medal and numerous campaign medals.

During his lifetime, he enjoyed woodworking, golf, reading, cars, yard work, entertaining and Husker football.

He is survived by brother Brendan of Alexandria, Va., daughters: Joyce and husband Jerry Robbins of Grand Junction, Colo., and Janet and husband Chuck Caul of Blair; six grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by an infant son, Frederick; wife Peggy; sister Jinny; brothers Donald, Raymond and Bernard.
